Course Overview

The American Red Cross Lifeguarding Course is designed to provide entry-level lifeguards with the knowledge and skills needed to prevent, recognize, and respond to aquatic emergencies. Participants will also learn how to provide professional-level care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries, and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services (EMS) arrive.

This program includes training in:

  • Lifeguarding, First Aid, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, & AED use

Eligibility Requirements

Participants must be at least 15 years old on or before the final scheduled session.

Blended Learning Requirement

This is a blended learning course, which includes both online and in-person components.

  • A portion of the course must be completed online prior to attending the first class.

  • After registering, participants will receive an email with instructions for completing the online portion.

  • A certificate of completion must be presented on the first day of class.


Prerequisite Skills Evaluation

After submitting proof of online completion, participants must successfully complete the following: On the first daY :

  1. Swim Test

    • Swim 300 yards continuously using front crawl, breaststroke, or a combination (no back or side swimming).

    • Demonstrate rhythmic breathing.

    • Goggles are permitted.

  2. Treading Water

    • Tread water for 2 minutes using only legs (hands under armpits).

  3. Timed Event (1 minute, 40 seconds)

    • Swim 20 yards (goggles not allowed).

    • Perform a surface dive (7–10 feet) to retrieve a 10-pound object.

    • Return to the surface and swim 20 yards back, holding the object with both hands and keeping your face near the surface

    • Exit the pool without using a ladder or steps.


Certification Requirements

To receive certification, participants must:

  • Attend all class sessions

  • Successfully complete all required skills

  • Pass three final skill scenarios

  • Achieve a minimum score of 80% on each section of the written exam

Class Duration

  • In-person training: 24 hours

  • Online training: 7.5 hours

  • Total: 31,5 hours

  • The online portion must be completed at least 24 hours before the first class

Certification Validity

Lifeguarding / First Aid / CPR / AED certifications are valid for 2 years

Payment & Refund Policy

  • Course fee is due on the first day of class, along with proof of online completion

  • Participants who do not pass the prerequisite test will receive a full refund

  • No refunds will be issued for:

    • Failure to attend

    • Missing more than two classes
